ICPR – International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine

Climate change and its effects in the Rhine catchment area

19/20 March 2025, Arnhem

A sustainably managed and climate-resilient Rhine catchment is the vision of the ICPR for the year 2040 according to the programme "Rhine 2040". In order to "become climate-resilient", the ICPR will, among other things, update its 2015 strategy for adaptation to climate change by 2025. Various ICPR groups provided input.

All the results were collected at an international and interdisciplinary workshop in Arnhem on 19/20 March 2025. The effects of climate change and possible adaptation measures were also discussed as input for the update of the strategy published in 2015.

  • What are the current challenges for water quantity and availability, water quality, biodiversity and ecology as well as socio-economic developments with regard to climate change?
  • Which measures from the 2015 strategy are still relevant, which new ones need to be added and how should they be prioritised?
  • What conflicts of interest may arise and what synergies are possible?
  • How can uncertainties with regard to adaptation to climate change be dealt with and what does appropriate communication look like?

These and many other questions were discussed by around 70 experts during the workshop.

During a boat trip on the Nederrijn to the IJsselkop and the Driel weir, the participants were able to see in practice flood and nature protection measures that have already been implemented.

Adaptation to climate change will remain an important topic for the ICPR in the coming years.
