In April 2023, the ICPR commissioned a study to evaluate the development of salmon populations in the Rhine system ("Salmon Study"). In recent years, the number of salmon returning has not increased to the extent that was expected due to the measures implemented. The new study should therefore primarily provide information on the possible causes - including more frequent low water phases and increased predation pressure - and formulate proposals for measures to optimise reintroduction efforts.
The accompanying policy summary summarises the results of the salmon study and provides an initial classification of the findings by the ICPR.
The ICPR will discuss the conclusions as part of the update of the Masterplan Migratory Fish.
The report is only available in German, French and Dutch.
