ICPR – International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine

(Micro)Plastics in the Rhine - Emission areas and possible measures

11/12 December 2024, Bonn

As part of the ‘Rhine 2040’ programme, the ICPR has set itself the goal of significantly reducing the amount of waste, particularly plastic, entering the water bodies by 2040.

Since 2013, the ICPR has been exchanging information on the activities of the national states to reduce the entry of waste. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD – Directive 2008/56/EC) aims to reduce the amount of waste entering the sea. The OSPAR Action Plan for Marine Litter also addresses rivers as pathways and envisages cooperation with the river basin commissions.

On 11 and 12 December 2024, the workshop ‘(Micro-)Plastics in the Rhine – Emission areas and possible measures’ organised together with the BfG (German Federal Institute for Hydrology) took place in Bonn. On the first day (organised by the BfG), an input was provided on scientific topics (sampling, analysis, occurrence in the Rhine and ecotoxicological effects), which was then built upon on the second day (organised by the ICPR), where possible measures were discussed.

The goals of the ICPR workshop were:

  • to identify relevant emission areas for the Rhine river basin and
  • to collect proposals for reducing plastic pollution.

The results of the workshop will be further discussed and reviewed in the competent ICPR groups.
