Salmon is progressing

The development since 2014 has been promising. In 2015, more than 700 salmon were counted in the Rhine system. In the sole observation station at the fish passage in Iffezheim (Upper Rhine), 228 salmon were registered, which is considerably more than in previous years (see Figure)! In 2016, the number of registered salmon in the Rhine system was again lower, at a level comparable to 2014.
There are many reasons for the annual variation in the number of returners of different migratory species (see technical ICPR report no. 228 (only in German, French, Dutch), 232).

Returners on the Upper Rhine and High Rhine

During the winter 2011/2012, spawning salmons were detected in several tributaries to the Upper Rhine – in R. Kinzig near Willstätt as well as in R. Murg near Rotenfels. Salmon redds were also found in R. Alb near Karlsruhe as well as in R. Bruche and other tributaries of R. Ill in Alsace. The ICPR programme “Rhine 2020 / Salmon 2020” and the “Master Plan Migratory Fish Rhine” paved the way for this development.
